Don’t look now but the Spurs just won four games in a row – the last three against the alleged contenders of the Western Conference. Granted the Mavs were without Dirk, it’s still satisfying to watch S.A. smash thru the early conference favorites one after the other.

After beating the Lakers 97-82 last Tuesday, the Spurs went on to beat the Mavs in Dallas on Thursday 99-93. That was an interesting game since the Mavericks were without Dirk Nowitzki but the Mavericks still gave the Spurs all they could handle behind Caron Butler’s season-high 30 points and yet another triple-double from Jason Kidd. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Tim Duncan had a bounce back game with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Gary Neal came off the bench to bombard Dallas with 21 points of his own. I kind of had to laugh at the Mavs starting Brian Cardinal. Did they think he could pass for Nowitzki and draw double-teams or something? Anyway, the poor Mavs – who I actually am more worried about than the Lakers right now – suffered another setback when Caron Butler hurt is knee in their next game, a loss in Milwaukee. finally, the Spurs completely dismantled the Thunder 101-74 on Saturday night. They held Kevin Durant to 16 points and the Thunder to 33% shooting from the field. Only Serge Ibaka came to play with 14 points, 13 boards, four blocks, and a steal – although he shot only 5-of-13 from the floor himself. Tim Duncan led all scorers with 21 points while Tony Parker had 14 points and 10 dimes.

So there the Spurs sit atop the West – the league in fact – with a 29-4 record. Nearly halfway thru the season I have to say that I think they’re only contending with three teams this year: The Mavericks (25-8), the Celtics (25-7), and maybe Miami’s Dwyane Wade and Friends (26-9). Orlando has an outside shot with their revamped roster, and Lakers can’t be counted out just yet, but if I had to call it now then I’d say get ready for a Spurs-Celtics finals. I just don’t see anyone in the West with the depth or the championship pedigree of the Spurs. Dallas is deep but are not proven winners. The Lakers are winners, but their depth is non-existent – and WTF happened to Ron Artest? Can someone chuck a beer at this clown and get his blood pumping again? As for the East, the Celtics are the clear front-runner so long as they can remain healthy during the playoffs. It seems that they are getting their injuries out of the way early this season (Rondo, Pierce, Garnett, Shaq) so maybe that won’t be an issue. Miami is kind of a question mark. They are figuring out how to win, but can they do it in a 7-game series against a quality team? I say no. And they have to remain healthy too. Losing Haslem hurt them a lot and their interior defense was weak to begin with. Can LeBron and Wade win them four games in a series on their own? Probably not.

Next up to bat are the New York Knicks, who are actually one of my favorite teams. Yes, I grew up loving the Knicks – partially cuz I was a kid who was happy to sport some Ewing sneakers, I hated Michael Jordan and all of his zombie-like worshippers, and gravitated to the scrappiness of players like Xavier McDaniel, Charles Oakley, and John Starks. Chris Childs punching Kobe also helped. Having said all that, the Knicks stand no chance. The Spurs are just better in every way, and the Knicks will be without Danilo Gallinari who is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks with a sprained knee. So with that, I expect the Spurs to notch their 5th win in row tomorrow night.

The Spurs defeated the Mavs 97-87  and won the series 4-2. The Suns finished off the Blazers last night 99-90 and will be the next team the Spurs face.

The big story, besides the Spurs eliminating the Mavs who have completed yet another epic fail in the post-season, was that the Spurs built a 22 point lead in the first half that the Mavs whittled down to 13 by halftime. The Mavs even had a one-point lead for about 20 seconds or so in the third quarter before Manu Ginobili hit a three-pointer and put the Spurs back up to stay. The Mavs were led by Dirk Nowtizki (of course) who had 33 points, 25 of them in the second half. Caron Butler had 25 points of his own, and Roddy Beaubois came off the bench to score 16 points and provide the third quarter spark that really got Dallas going in the second half.

After rambling about how the Mavericks were definitely going to win in San Antonio, Jason Terry scored only two points after going 1-of-7 from the field. Way to put your money where your mouth is, “JET”. I have to say that the most disappointing player for Mavericks fans has got to be Shawn Marion, followed closely by Jason Kidd. I mean you already know that Dampier is garbage, Haywood is good but not great, and your bench is suspect unless one of your undersized guards has a great game – and even then they are all defensive liabilities. Then to have Kidd not really make a difference for the Mavs, and Marion be so pathetic – that’s got to sting. Marion had one half-way decent game where he scored like 14 points, every other game he was barely even a complimentary player. But fear not, Mavs fans. I am sure Mark “Frankenhead” Cuban will sign Rasheed Wallace, Jermaine O’Neal, or some other washed up player and get your hopes up again this summer. On the real tho, don’t sweat Dirk leaving. As Charles Barkley said, there is no way Dirk is walking away from $21 million. They really do need to get him some help though – meaning players with talent AND heart. I think Dirk deserves better than this.

Manu led the charge for the Spurs again and finished with 26 points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal. Tim Duncan had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five assists, three steals and three blocks. Two of those blocks came in a stand at the end of the third quarter where he threw a Beaubois shot about 10 feet, and then stuffed Butler at the rim. George Hill made some timely buckets down the stretch and finished with 21 points, and six rebounds. Tony Parker had a nice all-around game with 10 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and not one turnover.

McDyess also made some timely shots in this game and finished with eight points and six boards. He also had five fouls and had a stretch where he kept hacking Dirk and giving away points. Luckily, he learned to quit doing this toward the end of the game. It also helped that Keith Bogans guarded Dirk for awhile. I have to admit, Bogans played some really good defense on Dirk. It’s just like what Stephen Jackson did to him a couple of years ago when the Warriors beat the Mavs in the first round. Have a small forward body him up, stick their hands in front of his chest and face – not by his waist - and he gets agitated. It doesn’t always work, but it can work enough to get a stop here or there which is how the Spurs pulled away in the waning moments of the fourth quarter. DeJuan Blair played five minutes in spite of being in a car accident before the game. He had four points.

Other Stats:
-The Spurs took care of ball with only 8 turnovers for the game.
-The rebound edge was almost nothing but favored the Spurs 43-40
-The Spurs went back to shooting in the upper 40′s with 47.4% to 43.8% for the Mavs.
-Some folks will surely complain about the Spurs getting twice as many free throw attempts, but the Spurs had a 40-32 edge in Points in the Paint. In other words, they were aggressive and took it to the rack more often than the Mavs. Although, there was one really bad call where Duncan got an And-1, but he missed damn near every free-throw he shot anyway so whatever.
-The Spurs had a 17-10 edge in Fast Break Points. Isn’t that supposed to be the Mavs style? Suns too?

I even got to see Frankenhead get mad. It was a great game.

I was hoping the Spurs would put the finishing touches on another Mavs implosion, but instead it was basically a blowout loss as the Mavs won 103-81. The Spurs had 18 turnovers – four from Ginobili. Also, the Spurs have shot in the upper 40′s all series, but had their worst night at 35.9% yesterday. I don’t see that happening again. Caron Butler showed a pulse which was interesting, and he finished with 35 points and 11 rebounds to lead all scorers… and rebounders for that matter. I don’t see that happening again either. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 18 points, but everyone else was “eh”. No point in looking at boxscores since Manu, Tim, Jefferson, and Hill played limited minutes as the game got out of hand. At least they’ll be well rested for the next game, of course so will Kidd and Dirk.

Now we must endure all the front-runners and fair-weather Mavs fans who 24 hours ago had to be talked off ledges but now insist that the Mavs will win in San Antonio and of course win Game 7. I don’t buy it, but I will admit that it’s possible. Anything is possible in the NBA except for speaking your mind after a game without a fine or getting that slum-lord Donald Sterling to sell the Clippers to someone who gives a crap about basketball. Other that that, pretty much anything.

It’s also possible for the Mavs to play like they did in Games 2, 3, and 4. One thing that does bother me is that the Spurs allowed some large leads in Games 3 and 4 that they had to overcome. As we saw last night, they can’t always bounce back. They need to come out swinging in Game 6, and Tim and Manu need to bring their best stuff.

A four-point game from Tim Duncan can be dismissed as an aberration. Especially when you win anyway.

What happens, though, when Duncan follows up the four points with a mere 11 points in what was supposed to be his bounce-back game?

The Spurs, though, will be facing undeniable pressure all their own to close the Mavs out at home Thursday night, after Dallas hit the visitors with an active and effective defensive display that led to numerous opportunities to push the ball, setting up Caron Butler to finally join this series at last with a career playoff-high 35 points.

The Dallas Morning News threw out some real numbers that are cause for concern:

For the second straight game, Tim Duncan looked every bit of his 34 years.

In two games since breaking his nose, Manu Ginobili has shot 6-for-23. And for the second time in this series, Richardson Jefferson’s performance was more bow-wow than wow.

Now will the Spurs join history as the losing end of one of the rare occurrences when a team blows a 3-1 lead? Or will they man up and boot the Mavericks out of the 2010 playoffs? We’ll find out tomorrow at 7:00 PM Central in San Antonio. Manu Ginobili is at it again. Bleeding from a nasal fracture from a Dirk elbow in the third quarter, Manu bandaged that sucker up and scored another 11 points in the 4th quarter to keep the Mavs at bay in a 94-90 win. Dallas went on a little run to take a nine point lead late in the game, but it wasn’t enough. Ginobili finished with 15 points, five rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and one block. He is now averaging 21.3 points in this series. He did much of his damage last night by getting to the free throw line where he was 7-of-8. The Spurs shot 20-of-26 from the line in this game while the Mavs went 14-of-15.

George Hill decided to finally join the party last night. He had 17 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. Nice to see you, George. The Spurs needed him to step up since RJ faded into the background again and Tony Parker is playing well enough as a reserve that Popovich probably would like to keep that going. RJ finished with six points, three rebounds, and three assists. Parker finished with 23 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. He is averaging 19 points in the series.

Tim Duncan had 25 points, five rebounds, four assists, and one block. He didn’t really crash the boards, but then again, no one did. There were no double-doubles in this game from either team. The main thing for Duncan is he had another five turnovers. He had six in Game 1, but none in Game 2. He is averaging 25.7 points in this series.

The rebounding edge belonged to no one as both teams were even in that department. Turnovers were about the same as well. However, the Spurs shot 11 more free throws than Dallas. Of course, they also missed every three-point attempt while Dallas went 8-of-20 from downtown. In the end, it was just slightly better shooting that made the difference as the Spurs shot 48.7% from the field compared to 44.7% for Dallas.

Dirk was the best player for the Mavs, as usual, with 35 points, seven rebounds, three asssits, two steals, and one block. Also, Jason Terry is doing his thing off the bench still. He finished with 17 points and was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

The Dampier/Haywood tandem was as pitiful as ever finishing with a combined four points, eight rebounds, one steal, one turnover, and seven fouls. Wow, they can’t even manage a double-double  between them – and in a combined 45 minutes? Even the Spurs’ DeJuan Blair had two points, five rebounds, one assist and no turnovers last night, and he only played about 4 minutes. Caron Butler and Shawn Marion have been non-factors in the past two games, well Marion has been a non-factor in all three. Granted Rick Carlisle opted to go with the hot-shooting J.J. Barea (14 points) for much of Game 3 instead of Butler, the fact of the matter is Butler needs to show up for the Mavs to have any chance. Shawn Marion is not any better and hasn’t reached double digits in scoring or rebounding once in this series. The Mavericks picked these two guys up specifically for this moment and neither is worth a flip right now. The Mavs have no chance of winning it all this year even if they miraculously make it past the Spurs. Frankenhead will probably spend another few million to bring in another fringe star, former All-Star, or overrated has-been this summer and everyone will get all excited until this time next year when the Mavs start falling apart yet again. Tsk. Tsk.

The NBA Playoffs are ready to start and the bracket is below along with my thoughts on each round and my own predictions all the way to the NBA Finals. If I am wrong then so be it, but if I get it right I need proof that I “knew it all along” so here goes…

First Round
Western Conference:
LA Lakers vs Oklahoma City Thunder > LA Lakers
This has the potential to be one of the funnest matchups in a long time. Durant is the youngest scoring champ in NBA history and is going against one of the best players the league has ever seen. It has all the makings of one of those classic “pass the torch” matchups. The only problem is that it isn’t. The Thunder just aren’t there yet and will be lucky to win a game against a well coached Lakers team who will make quick work of the young OKC squad. Scott Brooks is on his way as a fine coach, but this is where the real lessons are learned and the happy-to-be-in-the-playoffs-Thunder are going to get a quick, not-so-subtle lesson in humility. Still, I think that Durant and company will make this an entertaining series and Kobe has no shortage of fans or haters (me included) to keep things extra interesting. Prediction: Lakers in 5

Denver Nuggets vs Utah Jazz > Utah Jazz
The Nuggets are falling apart and have lost their coach and their mojo over the past month. They are 6-7 in their past 13 games and got pummeled in a blow-out loss against Phoenix in their season finale. Coach Karl is expected to miss at least the first round of the playoffs which means he is basically going to miss the playoffs. However, the Jazz don’t exactly inspire much confidence either, especially after the way they lost in their season finale, also against the Phoenix Suns. I think that neither team is a serious contender but they will battle eachother to a near standstill before one ultimately prevails  over the other only to get ousted in the next round. Prediction: Jazz in 7

Phoenix Suns vs Portland Trail Blazers > Phoenix Suns
The Suns are on a mission right now after thrashing both Denver and Utah in the past week en route to a 14-2 finish. The Blazers are likely going to be without their leading scorer and best overall player, Brandon Roy. The Blazers have shown that they can meet many challenges over the course of the season, but this is the end of the line for Portland. They can only hope that next year Greg Oden doesn’t get another case of janky-knees or pose for anymore risque pictures. Prediction: Suns in 5

Dallas Mavericks vs San Antonio Spurs > San Antonio Spurs
Oh boy. Revenge or Repeat? I say revenge for the Spurs. The Mavs made a nice little blockbuster deal during All-Star Weekend, but Caron Butler is not having quite the impact he was expected to. He’s no slouch, and is miles better than the inconsistent, injury-plagued, blitzed out of his mind Josh Howard, but he is not taking this team to the next level – at least not yet. Haywood has probably had a bigger impact for the Mavs. Still, after the Mavericks went on their 13 game win streak shortly after the trade, they came back down to earth and started looking mortal again. Can they win it all? Certainly, but they are known more for blowing up for no apparent reason than winning championships. Enter the Spurs. San Antonio has been slowly but surely integrating several new players into the Spurs system and while the results were not so great early on, they are now showing signs of being a legit contender. They can absolutely upset the Mavericks and anyone else in their path. Last year the Spurs didn’t have Manu Ginobili for the playoffs, and this year he returned to form in a big way and got a $39 million contract extension to boot. George Hill’s defense will factor in as well. He won’t stop Kidd from getting his fair share of assists, but he can keep the point guards for the Mavs from running amok. I’ll do a more in-depth preview of this matchup, but for now let’s just say that this matchup has “upset” written all over it. Prediction: Spurs in 6

Eastern Conference:
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Chicago Bulls > Cleveland Cavaliers
The Bulls barely managed to make the playoffs, and while their epic series against the Celtics showed a lot of promise, the only promise they have this year is a swift execution. Cleveland is the favorite in the East if not the league and will dispatch the Bulls quickly and with authority. Prediction: Cavs in 4

Boston Celtics vs Miami Heat > Boston Celtics
The Celtics are nowhere near the dominant team they were a few years ago when they were NBA champs. The Big Three are older, slower, and a little bit rickety. Even Doc Rivers is hinting at bailing out before it gets worse next season. They just aren’t the same squad. Bill Simmons blames Rasheed Wallace to an extent which is probably about accurate, although I think it’s more an effect than a cause. The cause is that they simply aren’t as hungry, aren’t as desperate, and aren’t as good as they once were. Having said that, the Miami Heat have very little chance of advancing. As hopeless as I think the Celtics are when it comes to winning it all this year, the Heat are not any better. Can they upset the Celtics? Certainly. Will they? I think not. Prediction: Celtics in 7

Atlanta Hawks vs Milwaukee Bucks > Atlanta Hawks
I don’t really like Milwaukee, but I like Brandon Jennings. He won’t be able to win this for the Bucks though. Atlanta has a veteran point guard in Bibby who will run all over the Bucks who really don’t have anyone on the team that’s playoff tested unless you count Jerry Stackhouse or Kurt Thomas  – and I don’t. John Salmons has a little bit of experience with Chicago, but that won’t be enough to overcome the Hawks. Atlanta wants everyone to know they are for real, and they are not going to let the Bucks stand in their way. Prediction: Hawks in 6

Orlando Magic vs Charlotte Bobcats > Orlando Magic
The Charlotte Bobcats are making their first playoff appearance with Larry Brown leading the charge. They have the coaching and the personnel to flat out embarrass the Orlando Magic if they don’t come with it. I still don’t see it happening though. The Bobcats are good, but Orlando has too many weapons at every position and even an injury to one of the Magic’s key players probably wouldn’t be enough to derail them this early on. They need to focus on this opponent and this round though, or they will be taking an early vacation. Prediction: Magic in 6

Second Round
Western Conference:
LA Lakers vs Utah Jazz > LA Lakers
The Lakers will be well rested and the Jazz will be out of their element in this round. Aside from Deron Williams at point guard, the Jazz have no favorable matchups in this round and he won’t have an easy day with everyone from Fisher, to Kobe, to Artest pushing him around. Prediction: Lakers in 6

Phoenix Suns vs San Antonio Spurs > San Antonio Spurs
I don’t know why, but for some reason the Spurs always own the Suns. Maybe God hates the Suns or maybe just likes the Spurs – I don’t know. Maybe the fix is in. Either way, the Spurs almost always beat the Suns and this will be no different. Prediction: Spurs in 6

Eastern Conference:
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Boston Celtics > Cleveland Cavaliers
This is where the wheels fall off for Boston. This will be the last time the Big Three play in a series together, the last time Boston is considered a true contender, and hopefully the last time we are forced to look at Rasheed Wallace’s man-boobs. One can only hope. Prediction: Cavs in 6

Atlanta Hawks vs Orlando Magic > Orlando Magic
Orlando can smell the NBA Finals by this point and will be itching to get to Cleveland without being battered too much. That’s too bad though because the Hawks will give them everything they can handle. Atlanta has a good team, but not a great team, but they can take another step in the right direction in this series. Prediction: Magic in 7

Conference Finals
Western Conference:
LA Lakers vs San Antonio Spurs > LA Lakers
I want to be wrong. I want so desperately to be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening. The Spurs can beat the Lakers, but I fear that Artest and Kobe will harass RJ and Ginobili too much. I don’t think the Spurs can really account for Gasol and Bynum. The keys to this series for the Spurs will be the play of Tony Parker and George Hill at the point guard spot, and whether or not McDyess and Blair can neutralize Bynum at the center spot. The Spurs can beat the Lakers, but probably not four games out of seven. I just hope the Spurs batter the Lakers enough to weaken them for the Finals. Prediction: Lakers in 7

Eastern Conference:
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Orlando Magic > Cleveland Cavaliers
This is where the Magic are going to miss Hedo Turkoglu’s play-making ability. The Cavs defense is going to smother the Magic and do to them what they should have last season – knock them out of the playoffs. Prediction: Cavs in 6

NBA Finals
LA Lakers vs Cleveland Cavaliers > Cleveland Cavaliers
Kobe wants to repeat, but not as much as LeBron wants to win his first title. Kobe doesn’t have the same motivation that he had in previous seasons since Shaq left town, but LeBron has all the motivation in the world. Also, Shaq will surely enjoy snatching a championship away from Kobe. This is LeBron’s year and that’s all there is to it. The Cavs all know that if they don’t win it all, LeBron could walk. If they do win it all, there is no way LeBron walks away. Everyone in Cleveland knows this. You know it. I know it. The Lakers know it… and there is nothing they can do about it. Prediction: Cavs in 7

First off, Mason’s agent is trying to clarify that Mase is not demanding a trade, but is simply “open” to one. The reason, of course, is due to minutes. I’ve been saying all year that Mason should start at shooting guard if not Ginobili, but Pop stubbornly stuck to Keith Bogans for several months. Now George Hill is starting next to Parker, and while he is getting better and is coming along defensively, he is still undersized and I don’t recall him hitting any game winners like Mase did several times last season. According to the San Antonio Express News:

“One league executive said he expects the Spurs to make overtures at the Miami Heat, who are shopping a number of players, including power forward Udonis Haslem and small forward Dorell Wright.”

My response: Huh? What the hell are we gonna do with those guys? Is Haslem really any better than McDyess and Blair? Dorrell Wright? I’ll take my chances with RJ. If that’s the best the Spurs can pull off then, yes, our Spurs are doomed this season.

Why? Because they still can’t handle LA, even without Kobe and Bynum. The Mavs just got a lot better. That’s right. Despite some people saying that the Butler/Howard trade is a wash, it was not. Butler, who has largely been a bystander to the Wizards drama this season, will show up for the Mavs and play better than he did earlier this season now that he is away from the Arenas shenanigans and he has something to play for. Josh is a headcase and will not be any better tomorrow than he is today – especially not while playing for a losing team. Also, Haywood makes the Mavs better defensively and could be their long-term answer at center.

Also, the Clippers are close to sending Marcus Camby to Portland for Outlaw, Blake and some cash (rumor is 3 mil). This the same Portland team that the Spurs couldn’t beat without Brandon Roy twice. The same one that was starting Juwan Freaking Howard. The same one that beat the Spurs THREE TIMES this season.

And it don’t stop… the Amare Stoudemire sweepstakes is gonna be in the East with the Cavs and Heat both pursuing him.

Corey Maggette, another decent option for the Spurs, is rumored to be among Cleveland’s backup plans. While Antawn Jamison is one of Miami’s backup options.

Also, it looks like the Tyrus Thomas trade is more likely to happen for the T’Wolves than the Spurs.

Houston is still trying to move T-Mac (possibly to New York), and could improve significantly given the right pieces.

So the Heat, Cavs, Rockets, Blazers and even the friggin T’Wolves are going to be potentially better soon, the Mavs are already better, and the Lakers are, well, the Lakers still. The only silver lining I can see to these developments is that if Phoenix weakens itself by trading Amare, then they make it easier for the Spurs to make the playoffs. Of course, the Rockets improving kind of negates that. Portland and Dallas are in anyway, so no big deal there. The problem is that we don’t measure success in playoff appearances, we measure it in championships, and right now it doesn’t look like the Spurs know how to be that successful.

The Washington Wizards, desperate to turn over probably their entire roster after the Agent Negative 80 Million fiasco, completed a seven-player trade with the Dallas Mavericks today. That’s not a big deal until you realize that the Mavericks just got a whole lot better. The Wizards gave up Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and DeShawn Stevenson for a package of Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross, and James Singleton.

The trade kind of works out for the Wiz since they get to dump DeShawn Stevenson, the only player on the team significantly dumber than Arenas. Other than that they aren’t getting much. The Mavs unloaded the ever-moronic Josh Howard, as well as bench-warmers Ross and Singleton. Drew Gooden has played well, but is not exactly an upgrade over Haywood. Actually, Haywood is a better rebounder and defender. So really the main thing the Wiz accomplished was acquiring an extra $8 million in expiring contracts. Not too bad I guess.

The Mavericks came up though. No more of the weed-smoking, drag-racing, anthem-bashing, always-injured Josh Howard. They nix two scrubs who weren’t doing anything anyway, and they upgrade at Shooting Guard and Center. If Haywood doesn’t start before the end of the month then Rick Carlisle is an idiot. Jason Terry has already agreed to go back to the sixth man role to make room for Butler. Hmmm, an upgrade at two key positions and an unselfish sixth-man like Jason Terry? The Mavs just got real dangerous.

Coach Popovich needs to stop fooling around and at least try the Spurs best players in the starting lineup. Not to mention find a good trade out there, because with the way the Spurs have played this season, getting to the playoffs would be a major accomplishment, let alone winning a playoff series.

The Lakers are still the team to beat, but Dallas’s lineup of Haywood, Dirk, Marion, Butler, Kidd, and Terry off the bench is going to be problematic to say the least.
