Spurs Win Fourth Straight With First Road Win
It started ugly and ended ugly, and George Hill has the bloody nose to prove it, but the Spurs held on to beat the Houston Rockets for their fourth straight win and their first road win of the season. The Spurs missed 10 of their first 14 shots, but Houston never managed to build a lead bigger than seven points. The Rockets took a 46-44 lead into halftime, but a combination of Spurs defense and Rockets inept shooting all but doomed the Rockets as they went nearly eight minutes without a basket in the 3rd quarter. Meanwhile, the Spurs piled up an extra 14 points during that stretch. The Spurs, kind hearted souls that they are, did give the Rockets one more chance to win by committing six turnovers in the first seven minutes of the 4th quarter, and the Rockets managed to cut the deficit to two on a Carl Landry put back with less than a minute to go. That’s when Jefferson drove to the basket, was fouled, and get this – he made both free throws for a change. Going back the other way, the Rockets missed and George Hill got his nose bloodied while coming down with the rebound. Thanks Kyle Lowry. Hill stuck around to make his free throws and took a seat. Game Over (practically). 92-84 Spurs. Read more »

The Spurs, playing without Tony Parker and Tim Duncan for the second straight game, beat the Mavericks with relative ease last night. They led most of the way, although Dallas made a push in the 4th quarter when they outscored the Spurs 19-13. The Mavs went on a 15-4 run that saw the Spurs shoot an ugly 1-of-10 from the field and commit six turnovers while the Mavs cut the lead to 83-79. Fortunately, with three minutes to go, Matt Bonner nailed a three-pointer that gave the Spurs enough breathing room to hang on for the win. It was a timely shot since the Spurs’ three-point shooting started tailing off right at the end there and was looking a little flat.
The Spurs began the season with a 113-96 win over the New Orleans Hornets last night. I predicted a 13-point win, but I can live with being wrong like this – a 17 point win, and really it wasn’t even that close. Oddly enough, the Spurs didn’t have a single blocked shot in this game, and the Hornets shot 50 percent from the field, which begs the question, “Uhhh, how exactly did the Spurs win?” Well, The Spurs started a little cold letting the Hornets out to a 10-4 lead before Pop (who thankfully shaved that scraggly beard) had seen enough and called a timeout. After that it was all but over, largely due to a 16-0 run in the 2nd quarter.
